Description

The North Rhine-Westphalian Graf Moltke coal mine near the town of Gladbeck in the Ruhr area was in operation from 1873 until its final closure one hundred years later. It produced a number of decent collectors’ specimens, however, magnificent pieces like this one where the absolute exception: A cluster of blocky, chisel-shaped crystals measuring a whopping 11.6 cm tall, with excellent adamantine luster, sharp edges, and excellent terminations. The minimal ding on one corner is hardly bothersome. The color ranges from whitish-grey to light gray with faint phantoms, especially in ore translucent sections of the crystals. This is a great German classic from 1950, evidenced by the original label from the Loorz Collection, Bockswiese that comes with the specimen.
