Description
This is an excellent and very typical Sand Calcite from South Dakota, most likely from Rattlesnake Butte. The scalenohedral crystals are extremely well crystallized for the species and many are doubly terminated. This is a very nice sculptural piece with only minimal contact. Snake Butte is a National Natural Landmark, managed by the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Authority and is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It is illegal to collect fossils, artifacts and minerals on reservation land without a permit from the tribe. A more recent article in the Rocks & Minerals magazine had a good article about Sand Calcite.
