Description

This is a quite unusual but definitely highly aesthetic Calcite specimen from the somewhat lesser known Herculano Mine about 5 km east of better-known La Union in southeast Spain. The color is certainly unusual for Calcite. It is olive to brownish with a metallic look, a fine luster, and a faintly iridescence. The crystals have a variety of forms, and most have exact and perfect terminations reminiscent of a “Mercedes” star, short-prismatic “Kanonenspat” as well as squat scalenohedrons. A perfect specimen with a completely intact display side. These Calcite specimens came on the market in small quantities at the end of the 1990s, but disappeared again as quickly as it appeared.
