Description
This is a beautiful combination specimen of dark red-brown, relatively iron-rich Sphalerite and beige, bladed Siderite and very little transparent Quartz. The Sphalerite with a multitude of crystal forms has good resinous luster and is gemmy translucent. The Siderite is bladed with a silky luster. A very nice contrast and good overall aesthetics and balance. The Stahlberg Mine is also called “Schwabengrube”, was an Iron mine and is considered the oldest mine in the Sigerland district. Records of the mine date back to 1313. It was abandoned in 1913 and is now operated as a tourist mine and museum, run by volunteers.
