Description

The Traversella skarn deposit, located east of the Italian city of Torino, has yielded a variety of wonderful mineral specimens over the years, including this excellent Magnetite on matrix. Although not 100% undamaged, this remarkable octahedron measures an astonishing 2.8 cm in diameter, has a high metallic luster and nicely beveled edges. Since the Traversella Mine is now used as a visitor mine, top pieces like this are history and extremely difficult to obtain. In my opinion, the label supplied with the specimen indicates that the piece is from the now defunct Bally-Prior Museum in Schönewerd/Switzerland, whose collection was auctioned off in 2003. But I cannot prove my hunch.
