Description

This is an Australian top specimen from the well-known North Mine of Broken Hill in the western reaches of the New South Wales outback. Numerous deep reddish-brown—in transmitted light even wine-red— sharp and translucent Spessartine crystals are perched on massive lead-grey Galena. The Spessartine measuring up to 1.5 has the best vitreous luster possible and extremely well formed crystals, some with beveled edges. Since this mine was shut down in 1993, such specimens are now history and as a result, very sought after. This is definitely one of the best and most aesthetic pieces of this species from Broken Hill that have passed through my hands in the last 20 years and offered at a very reasonable price.
