Description
This is an excellent Limonite specimen, called “Brauner Glaskopf” by miners way back when. The term is derived from German “Glatzkopf”, meaning baldhead. Look at the specimen and you’ll understand the term! The piece is from the Nitzlbuch Mine (aka Maffei Mine), an old and abandoned Iron mine northeast of Nürnberg. The anthracite-black botryoidal clusters up to 0.4 cm cover the entire specimen. They have a velvety luster, and the radial fibers that make up the spherical aggregates can be seen. A great classic with top aesthetic! It comes with Loorz/Bockswiese label indicating a 1938 find when the mine was still active.
