Description
The Sand Calcite from Fontainebleau, south of Paris in central France, are Calcite crystals included with sand grains, and are known for amazingly sculptural appearence. In this case, we have a cluster composed of sharp, well-defined Calcite rhombohedrons to 2 cm on edge, that almost resembles an artichoke or pineapple. The Calcites are intergrown and overlap, creating a distinctive and highly aesthetic three-dimensional look. Since considerable time, these are considered French classics, and this floater ranks highly even among those I have seen in the best old collections. It is even better in person, where you can better appreciate the three-dimensionality of this specimen. The piece is remarkably pristine and display-worthy, and highly aesthetic.
