Description

A classic specimen of Schalenblende, which was the main ore at the Segen Gottes Mine near Wiesloch. Alternating layers of Galena, Wurtzite und Sphalerite (possibly a little Jordanite) create this unique reniform texture of the specimen. The Segen Gottes Mine is an old Lead-Zinc mine that was actively mined from 1850 until 1953. However, tunnels dating to Medieval Times have been discovered. Most of the dumps of the mine have been reclaimed and most of the sulphides have since decomposed into a dark mass that smells of sulfurous oxide, a gas with a strong stinging odor of burnt matches.
