Description
TITANITE is frequently called SPENE, which was the more popular term for this mineral until 1982. In 1982, however, the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) discredited Sphene and changed the official name to Titanite. One does not need to understand why, but this is what the IMA does.
Titanite is a typical Alpine cleft mineral, and this is exactly what this specimen is. A sharp, yellowish-green crystal, doubly terminated, and with a glassy luster perched on typical Alpine cleft matrix. A superb crystal from an Alpine locality in the Naturpark Hohe Tauern (Hohe Tauern National Park). Don´t get caught collecting there. It´s prohibited!
