Description
Here we have a superb and extremely colourful cluster of well developed and cubed Fluorite from the famous Marienschacht (Marien Shaft) of Wölsendorf in Bavaria. The Fluorite has an exceeding intensive amber yellow colour, is sharp edged and highly lustrous. Clarity and overall aesthetics are great as well. A super piece from the heyday of this great mine in the 1960s. Due to the economic situation of fluorspar mining in Germany had become increasingly difficult due to the availability of cheaper products from overseas. As a result, on 30th June 1979, the Marienschacht Mine ceased operations and decommissioning work commenced immediately. The mine was finally closed with a reinforced concrete slab on 29th November 1979 and the decommissioning work was largely complete by 31st December 1979. By 1980 final works for the closure of the mine were finished, the shafts had been backfilled, the buildings were torn down and the surface structures removed. (mindat)
