Description
A great Augite crystal, measuring 4.3 cm from the volcanoes of the Eifel, a low mountain range in western Germany that stretches into eastern Belgium and northern Luxembourg. This monoclinic member of the Pyroxene group has a vitreous luster with smaller crystals intimately attached. This specimen is from the best-preserved water filled maar (volcanic cone) in the Quaternary volcanic Eifel in Germany’s northwest. And if I had all the time of the world, I would clean this specimen to increase its aesthetic appeal.
