Description
A nice, 242 gram fragment of the Gibeon Iron-Nickel meteorite. It has all the features you except from an Iron meteorite. Anthracite-black in color with some brownish oxidation in small cavities, metallic luster, and of course, it is magnetic. The Gibeon meteorite, fallen in prehistoric times and discovered, depending on the source in 1836 or 1838, sits out in the sparsely populated desert of the Great Namaqualand. The meteorite is believed to have partially fallen apart upon entry into the atmosphere. The main mass, a 26 ton behemoth can be visited out in the desert, while smaller fragments have made their way into private collections as well as museums.
