Description
We have mentioned the Island of Elba in earlier descriptions of this auction. But we have not yet to mentioned that the island holds the type locality for Ilvaite. Maybe not as impressive as the ilvaite that came out of China until recently but with a much more charming history. This specimen, a cluster of ilvaite crystals, is grouped around an impressive, almost 3 cm tall main crystal. You may mistake ilvaite for trigonal black tourmaline because of its vertical striation on the prism faces, however, a closer look at the termination shows its orthorhombic symmetry. This specimen does not just appeal to collectors of type localities but alos to the collectors´ community at large.
