Description
Here we have a superb Chalcanthite specimen from the Planet Mine of Arizona. The Planet Mine is well known for spectacular neon-blue Chalcanthite specimens and this impressive small cabinet specimen more than upholds this reputation. The curving bundles of fibrous crystals are over 2 cm long and the contrast with the matrix is amazing. This Fe-Cu-Ag-Au-Silica mine produced sporadically from 1863 to 1937. It is almost certain that these crystals originated in post mining conditions within the mine tunnels after that heyday, as copper-rich waters drained through the tunnels and shafts, creating an environment for this hydrated copper-sulfate to form. Note: Chalcanthite is toxic if swallowed.
