Description
Deep brown, tetragonal Wernerite (Scapolite) crystals in typical pegmatite matrix of the Ampandrandava Phlogopite Mine in Madagascar. The mine active from 1938 until its closure produce these incredible specimens with translucent Scapolite crystals to 1.5 cm with a vitreous luster. The name Wernerite was introduced in 1800 in Europe as a varietal name or synonym of Scapolite, however in 1986, when the Scapolite nomenclature was revisited by the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names (CNMMN), “the name Wernerite be discarded as being synonymous with Scapolite”
